Obituary

Florence Edna Hansen, 95 years old, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, from age-related pneumonia in her home in Salinas.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1916 to Curt Arthur Sahr and Florence Esther Sahr, Florence and her older brother, Curt Arthur, Jr. and her younger sister lived in Hawaii until she was in her third year. Her father was an agronomist with the United States Department of Agriculture, working with the native populations to start pineapple plantations. The family then moved to the Philippines to begin the process there. She recited many stories of living in the Philippines without benefit of modern conveniences, and the constant threat of snakes. Eventually the family moved to Southern California, settling in San Bernardino where her sister Carla joined the family. Florence went through the local public schools, and graduated from San Bernardino High School, where she met the love of her life, John (Jack) Christian Hansen. They were married in 1937, and Florence started life as the bride of a Federal Forest Ranger, becoming very self-sufficient in remote ranger stations. Her first child, Janice, was born in 1939.

During World War II, Florence became a 'war bride' when her husband enlisted in the Navy. Her second child, John, was born in 1944. Upon discharge from the Navy, a job with the California Division of Forestry opened, and the couple moved to the San Joaquin Valley where her third child, Evelyn, was born in 1948.

Florence supplemented the family income with secretarial jobs in the Coalinga Chamber of Commerce, Speed B. Lease Insurance and Real Estate Company, and the Fresno City Schools, from which she retired. Since her husband preceded her in death in 1965, Florence continued to work and manage the household until her youngest child had graduated from college. She lived in Fresno for more than 50 years, and lived in Auberry for a time with her oldest daughter, moving to Salinas to be closer to children and grandchildren in 2005.

Florence was also preceded in death by her parents, and all her siblings. She is survived by her three children and seven grandchildren: Steven Fox, Jenny Hansen, Alex Hansen, Will Hansen, Christopher Edwards, Samantha Edwards-Brown, and Kelleigh Edwards. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews, and her constant companion, Nikki the Kitty.
