We do not know much about Jetta's life and how she got to the state of Virginia (from the name of the photographer on one of the pictures), then to San Bernardino, CA. There was a fairly large community of Danes in San Bernardino at the time. We have a large photo of the Danish American picnic in San Bernardino around 1900 or so, with quite a few people, over a hundred at least. It's too big to scan and send to you, sorry. We do know that Jetta ran a boarding house in San Bernardino, Agnes started working and helping her mother when she was old enough to reach the table and set the dishes on it. She went to school, then came home and washed dishes, did laundry and cooked for the men staying there at the boarding house. She remembered feeling a little angry that she had to help her mother all the time and her brothers did not (it was women's work!). It was never said exactly, but my mom and sister and I decided that Jetta ran the boarding house to have a regular income to feed her children. It sounded like her husband Chris might have stopped at the bar or pool hall on the way home and spent most of his pay on beers, and did not bring much money home. We do know that Jetta and Agnes worked hard, long hours at the boarding house. According to Agnes, Jetta died of cancer. Agnes felt it was because of a poorly done hysterectomy a year or two earlier that had been infected and her mother never felt right after the operation. I don't know what Chris died of but maybe it was a lifetime of too much beer! Agnes died of old age basically. My Grandma Agnes was a great Danish cook, butter and cream sauce on everything. When we came over, she would go to the local farm not far from their house and the farmer would let her go out to the fields and pick the vegetables right then. She was a fantastic pie maker and rarely used a recipe, she just cooked and it was so delicious! She was very tiny, maybe 5 ft tall at the most, she was probably only about 4'8' tall, when she died.

Udrejst til Amerika. Ankomst New York 12 april 1882 med ss Cimbria fra Hamburg og Havre. Rejste med sin bror Christen.
