We do not know much about Jetta's life and how she got to t he state of Virginia (from the name of the photographer o n one of the pictures), then to San Bernardino, CA. There w as a fairly large community of Danes in San Bernardino at t he time. We have a large photo of the Danish American picni c in San Bernardino around 1900 or so, with quite a few peo ple, over a hundred at least. It's too big to scan and sen d to you, sorry. We do know that Jetta ran a boarding hous e in San Bernardino, Agnes started working and helping he r mother when she was old enough to reach the table and se t the dishes on it. She went to school, then came home an d washed dishes, did laundry and cooked for the men stayin g there at the boarding house. She remembered feeling a lit tle angry that she had to help her mother all the time an d her brothers did not (it was women's work!). It was neve r said exactly, but my mom and sister and I decided that Je tta ran the boarding house to have a regular income to fee d her children. It sounded like her husband Chris might hav e stopped at the bar or pool hall on the way home and spen t most of his pay on beers, and did not bring much money ho me. We do know that Jetta and Agnes worked hard, long hour s at the boarding house. According to Agnes, Jetta died o f cancer. Agnes felt it was because of a poorly done hyster ectomy a year or two earlier that had been infected and he r mother never felt right after the operation. I don't kno w what Chris died of but maybe it was a lifetime of too muc h beer! Agnes died of old age basically. My Grandma Agnes w as a great Danish cook, butter and cream sauce on everythin g. When we came over, she would go to the local farm not fa r from their house and the farmer would let her go out to t he fields and pick the vegetables right then. She was a fan tastic pie maker and rarely used a recipe, she just cooke d and it was so delicious! She was very tiny, maybe 5 ft ta ll at the most, she was probably only about 4'8' tall, whe n she died.
