Maynard J. Christensen was born near Beresford, South Dakota, on June 4, 1918, the youngest of eight children of Nielsine “Sena” and Julius Christensen; he had three sisters and four brothers. Maynard and his siblings attended school at Newdale in Clay County. His mother, Sena, died in 1941, causing Maynard and another brother to stay home and help their father with the farming.
Maynard served as a machinist’s mate in the United States Coast Guard and was home on leave in the summer of 1945, shortly before his death. On July 14, 1945, word was received by Coast Guard Machinist’s Mate Second Class Maynard Christensen’s family that during a mission, Maynard had been washed overboard in the Atlantic and lost at sea. Maynard was 27 years old at the time of his death. His niece, Darlene Ballard, was about eight years old and still remembers when she was told of the tragedy.
His name is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at East Coast Memorial, New York City.
